Abstract.
The article examines the evolution of the British system of political representation in the period from the end of the XVII till the beginning of the XIX century. The author touches on the basic tendencies of the gradual transformation of the early political parties into the constitutional mechanisms and the structures of political participation of the modern type. These processes are shown in close connection with the redistribution of prerogative powers, the progressive metamorphosis of personal monarchy into the parliamentary one, the complicated interrelations of the first British political parties with the monarchs and the Cabinet of Ministers. Special attention is paid to the analysis of historiography on this problem.
