Abstract.
The article studies the process of researching the Aral Sea in the middle of the ХIХ century by Alexei Ivanovich Butakov. In this paper, the author reveals the goals and objectives of the expedition of 1848-1849. Basing on archival materials, the results of the study of the Aral Sea under the leadership of Butakov and the importance of his discoveries for science are described. Special attention is paid to the reconnaissance of the Aral Sea, as well as the discovery of new islands made by Lieutenant Commander A. I. Butakov.
