REASONS AND FORMS OF ABDUCTION OF BRIDES IN OSSETIA IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE XIX - AT THE BEGINNING OF THE XX CENTURY

Abstract.
The article deals with the problem of bride abduction, which spread in Ossetia in the second half of the XIX - at the beginning of the XX century and came into conflict with the customary law of the Ossetians, namely, with the tradition of marriage in the form of matchmaking. On the basis of the analysis of archival materials relating to the issues of marriage by the abduction of brides the author considers the forms of abduction, the methods for the pacific or judicial settlements of cases, applied punishments including the imposition of penalty provisions, public influence and so on. The identified archival materials refute the prevailing opinion that the only reason of bride abduction practice was growth in the amount of bride price.
