Abstract.
The article examines the state of the frottola culture of two Italian regions - Emilia-Romagna and the Papal States - at the end of the XV - in the first half of the XVI century. Relying on the data concerning the activity and secular songs publications of certain authors, mostly unfamiliar, the paper concludes on the formation in these regions of the local tradition of the polyphonic song. The author emphasizes the prevalence of church musicians with different levels of adopting the genres of secular polyphony - from the single cases of using frottola to deeper penetration into the contemporary processes of transforming the song musical stylistics into the madrigal one.
