Abstract.
The article on the basis of the large corpus of documents characterizes the level of the literacy of the population of Vladikavkaz and North Ossetia in the 1920s. The paper provides statistical data on the age structure of the illiterate population. The authors analyze the activity of Soviet power bodies on the liquidation of illiteracy among the adult population of NEP epoch Vladikavkaz. Special attention is paid to the issues of cultural-educational and political-educational work among the women-mountaineers.
