LATONA FOUNTAIN FROGS - ICONOGRAPHIC PROGRAMME OF PETERHOF GRAND CASCADE AS A MANIFESTATION OF PETER THE GREAT’S ABSOLUTIST POLICY

Abstract.
The article broadens possibilities for the interpretation of the Peterhof Grand Cascade iconographic programme, which is still interpreted in scientific studies exclusively in connection with Russia’s victory in the Great Northern War (1700-1721). The comparison of certain elements of the cascade with the Latona Fountain in Versailles and Saint-Cloud Cascade discovers a new aspect of understanding the cascade programme in the context of Streltsy Uprising as a warning on sad consequences for everybody, who does not agree with the will of Peter the Great as an absolute monarch.
