CIRCASSIAN COLONIZATION IN OTTOMAN SYRIA IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE XIX - THE EARLY XX CENTURY

Abstract.
This article discusses the causes, circumstances and stages of North Caucasian immigrants’ settlement in Ottoman Syria and the peculiarities of their socio-economic and cultural adaptation to the local conditions. The role of the Circassians in the complex ethno-political conjuncture of the region is analyzed. The author concludes that the Circassian colonization contributed to the public security ensuring, the acceleration of the economic development and the consolidation of Ottoman administration power in Arab provinces.
