Abstract.
The article examines considerable milestones in the life of Taganrog Public Theatre of the XIX century - the oldest one in the Province of the Don Cossack Host. On the basis of archival data the functioning of the provincial theatre, the work of the impresarios, the repertoire, the genres, the impact of the theatre on the town’s culture and etc. are shown for the first time. The date of the earliest mentioning of the appearance of operetta genre on the provincial stage is revealed. The activity of the theatre, in which two troupes - dramatic and opera ones - worked simultaneously, is illustrated.
