Abstract.
The article describes the change of the attitude to Christian themes in Russian visual art that occurred at the beginning of the XX century. The author identifies the favourable and unfavourable conditions for religious ideas development, analyzes the specifics of their transformation, in particular, the influence of iconographic canon. Taking into account growing interest in Orthodox art the researcher proposes to appeal for avant-garde painters’ creative work to understand the further development of modern Christian art.
