Abstract.
The article analyzes the concept of commemoration as a material component and key instrument to form historical memory. The author identifies the basic factors influencing the process of historical memory forming, discovers the social nature of commemoration processes, its basic features and functions. The paper emphasizes the influence of political and socio-cultural imperatives on the commemorative practices of modernity.
