Abstract. The article examines how the modern researches of Maxwell’s synthesis of optics and electromagnetic theory contribute to solving the following problems: 1. Is nature really so simple to permit the theories integrating different phenomena? 2. How does the real synthesis of several theories differ from their mere conjunction? 3. Why is the synthesis of theories an epistemological advantage, not a shortcoming?
