Abstract.
The article examines the genesis of rationality in the framework of ancient tradition. The development of the metaphysical idea of rationality is in dependence on certain socio-cultural conditions. The intellectual revolution of transition to rational notional thinking was exercised due to the peculiarities of the city-state life of the ancient society. It is concluded that ancient thought gave the contemporary West European civilization an idea of the sanity of a man and the world, which served as a foundation for the further rational understanding of the Universe.
