Abstract. Consciousness in the context of culture is an ability of understanding and controlling thinking and behavior. Consciousness controls thinking either as the moderate consciousness of an interpreter or the perplexed consciousness of a perceiving personality. The article formulates the pattern of consciousness formation at the moment of understanding. The formal structures of consciousness in the context of culture are considered, and the volitional conscious regulation of thinking is analyzed.
