Abstract. In the article the philosophical and art-criticism analysis of the painting by Jean-François Millet “The Gleaners” of 1857 is presented. The basic composition structures of the work as concentrated expression of the essence of Millet’s painting content are identified. The analysis of the symbolic level of composition structures has allowed formulating a visual concept of the work. The content of the visual notion of the painting “The Gleaners” presents the inheritance of the cultural ideals of the era of the Northern Renaissance.
