Submitted: July 1, 2016
Abstract. The article focuses on the role of privateering in the history of the Anglo-French colonial rivalry in North America. The paper considers the insufficiently explored in the national historiography activity of the privateers - the Kirke brothers, - who took service with the English crown in the second quarter of the XVII century. For the first time the author traces the circumstances, under which the representatives of the Kirkes were in the epicenter of the Anglo-French maritime colonial rivalry, and identifies the connection of the Kirkes’ expedition aimed at the seizure of Quebec in 1629 with the history of the Scottish colonization of North America in the early modern period.
