Abstract. Relying on the materials of Kizlyar Commandant’s Archive the article examines the role of Russian authorities in the Caucasus region in settling conflicts related to horse-stealing between Kumyk rulers and Greben Cossacks in the XVIII century. Horse-stealing as one of serious crimes was widely spread in the Caucasus region. It influenced relations between Kumyk feudal rulers and Cossacks. Russian authorities, looking for peace and stability in the region, made great efforts to prevent crimes related to horse-stealing but they didn’t manage to eradicate horse-stealing in the XVIII century.
