“PEGIDA” AS CITIZENS’ MOVEMENT AGAINST ISLAMIZATION

Abstract.
The article considers a current problem related to the protest movement of the German citizens against Islamization in Germany and Europe referred to as “PEGIDA”. The aim of the paper is to analyze the nature of the movement and the reasons of its origin. The author analyzes the history, policy documents, as well as the influence of right-wing and especially populist forces on the qualitative development of the movement. Particular attention in the study is paid to the phenomena of local patriotism and traditionalism as the main reasons for the genesis of civil protest. In conclusion, on the basis of the analysis, the nature and character of the movement are revealed.
