Abstract.
The article is devoted to analyzing the development tendencies of sign-orientedness in the ornamentation of Ukrainian folk artistic culture, where the basic style-formative elements are geometric forms, which due to the formal aspect possess abstract nature. The study focuses on the traditional ornaments of Ukrainian folk embroidery. Having analyzed authentic material the author concludes on deep historical and cultural backgrounds for abstract sign-orientedness formation in Ukrainian ornamental culture, discovers the rich variability of ornamental figures and motifs, identifies the dominant colours and their symbolic element.
