Abstract.
The article concerns different genre roles of waltz in quartets by D. D. Shostakovich. It accentuates two varieties of waltz modifications - the genre transformation and the genre synthesis obtaining different semantic modes depending on specific situations and common dramaturgic directions of quartets. As a result, the tragic constituent of waltz nature in the composer’s quartets growing to the late period of his creative work is revealed.
