ROMAN ROADS AS A FACTOR IN THE CONQUEST OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE BY THE BARBARIANS (BY THE EXAMPLE OF ATTILA’S INVASION OF GAUL)

Abstract.
The article aims to examine influence of the Roman road system on the speed of the barbarians’ move into the Empire during the Migration Period. Hagiography and chronicles of the IV-V centuries served as sources for the research. The analysis indicates that Attila’s army used the Roman road system during invasion of Gaul in the middle of the V century. The author concludes on great importance of the Roman road system for successful conquest of Roman territories by the barbarians.
