THE CIRCASSIANS OF NORTH-WESTERN ANATOLIA IN THE PERIOD OF NATIONAL LIBERATION STRUGGLE IN TURKEY (1919-1921)

Abstract.
The article examines a special status of the Circassian population of North-Western Anatolia in the first years of civil confrontation between the pro-sultan forces supported by the Entente and the supporters of Turkey’s national independence. The author identifies the role of the Circassian factor in formation of the opponents’ organizational structures and strategies and in evolution of the military and political situation in the region. The paper concludes that the mentioned events influenced negatively ideological and political unity of the Circassian community and its elite.
