Abstract.
The article examines evolution of methodology of studying culture as a special system in domestic and foreign science. The main historical approaches to understanding culture are indicated, novelty of the problem is in the analysis of the accumulated knowledge in the context of the main theoretical and methodological approaches. Particular attention is paid to the process of transformation of the model of the life cycle of cultural systems from the standpoint of social and cultural dynamics; the theory of formation of the model of the life cycle of the cultural system is supplemented with characterization of complex social processes.
