THE STANDARD INTERPRETATION OF SCIENTIFIC THEORY AND FORMAL MODELS OF SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE DEVELOPMENT

Abstract. The article deals with a linear-cumulative model of the scientific knowledge development, based on the standard interpretation of the scientific theory proposed in the framework of the logical-positivist program for substantiating scientific knowledge. The abstract nature of this model has become the object of fierce criticism and has led to the assertion of the incommensurability of successive theories, the unrealistic nature of the statements of scientific theories and the impossibility of their evaluation as (approximately) true/false. The paper considers the set-theoretic model of the development of science, which allows avoiding both the extremes of the cumulative model and the recognition of a complete lack of continuity in the development of scientific knowledge.
