Abstract.
Since the times of Greco-Roman antiquity in social realism the processes of identification are considered as necessary tools for searching the foundations of personal existence and the formation of self-consciousness. In the Middle Ages the study of the processes of constructing an identity intertwines organically into a dispute about universals. Modern research is based on materialistic understanding of the world, and therefore, the identity is primarily understood as the equivalence between the real object and our knowledge of it.
