Abstract. The article considers the peculiarities of the scientific style of thinking that was formed within the framework of the classical science of the ХVII-ХIХ centuries. Particular attention is paid to the value of creativity. The paper demonstrates an ambivalent attitude towards it in the science of modern times. The author describes the discussion of scientists of the period of classical science about the creative nature of scientific research, the uniqueness of the creative abilities of the personality, the methodological consciousness. Based on the results of the analysis, the conclusion is made about the place of creativity in science.
