“ALFRED” OF THOMAS ARNE: MASQUE, OPERA OR ORATORIO?

Abstract.
The article is devoted to the genre attribution of the musical and theatrical composition of the English composer Thomas Augustine Arne (1710-1778) “Alfred”. The play of Arne is analyzed from the position of correlating with the genre features of a masque, opera and oratorio. There is a variety of its genre definitions in the scientific literature and publicism - both of the XVIII century, and of modern time. The author considers the problem of the contiguity of the notions “masque” and “opera” in the English musical theater and the instability of genre parameters.
