Abstract.
The article examines the problem of interpreting the theme of the Russian revolution of 1917 and the Civil War in the Ossetian professional visual art in the Soviet period. The analysis of historical and social contexts of Ossetian painters’ creative work leads the author to the conclusion that in the different periods of Soviet history the art according to the “spirit of the time” highlighted and interpreted the certain aspects of these historical events. The works of art were endowed with meanings, which satisfied the socio-political needs of the concrete historical period.
