QIPAO DRESS: TRADITION AND MODERNITY

Abstract. The article is devoted to the Chinese qipao dress, which during the first half of the XX century was the most popular form of the Chinese women’s costume. The object of the study is the qipao dress in a variety of its modifications; the subject is the qipao dress as the synthesis of traditional Chinese and western elements that determined the development of the Chinese women’s costume in the first half of the XX century, and as the symbol of national identity. The objective of the work is to present the qipao dress in the aspect of the history of its formation as a costume form of the beginning of the XX century, synthesizing the tradition of the Chinese national costume and western influences. For the first time the article presents the qipao dress not only as a phenomenon of the history of China’s costume and fashion, but also in the context of contemporary art, in which it plays the role of the marker of Chinese cultural identity.
