INTERRELATION OF JAZZ AND SOCIO-CULTURAL SITUATION IN THE USA IN THE 1960S

Abstract.
The article considers the interrelation of jazz and socio-cultural life of the USA in the 1960s. By the example of hard bop, soul jazz, funk and free jazz, the authors examine the interrelation of the basic socio-political phenomena and jazz styles. The following issues are emphasized: 1) orientation of the 1960s jazz towards the Afro-American folklore symbolizing the Afro-Americans’ racial self-consciousness; 2) application of eastern spiritual practices, which resulted in the integration of elements of the eastern (Indian and Arabic) traditional music; 3) combination of concert performances and political declarations; 4) integration processes aimed to synthesize jazz with academic music and folklore. So, American jazz of the 1960s was closely associated with social, political and cultural life of the country and responded keenly to changes in the people’s worldview.
