From Voice of Conscience to Friend’s Voice in Philosophies by M. Heidegger and H. Arendt

Abstract.
The problem of conscience is not reduced to ethical problematics and constitutes a major research area of modern ontology, which considers the problems of subject’s existence, consciousness, selfhood and its structure. The authors compare M. Heidegger’s existential-phenomenological analysis of conscience and interpretation of conscience in H. Arendt’s philosophy. The comparison of these approaches shows that involvement initially postulated in the conception of conscience does not mean commitment to ethical values or to a society represented as a multitude of abstract others but rather empathy for the Other personified in the image of a close friend. The thesis that friendly dialogue is an essential aspect of conscience is postulated.
