The English Consort Culture: History and Stages of Studying

Abstract.
The paper aims to reveal specificity of musical historical process in England by the example of the undeservedly forgotten genre of the English music of the late Renaissance and the early baroque - instrumental consort (ensemble) culture. Scientific originality of the research lies in the fact that the author provides a detailed survey of foreign performers and musicologists who contributed greatly to studying this remarkable phenomenon of the English musical culture. The conclusions are made that modern studies on the English consort culture of the XVI-XVII centuries are in line with antiquarian traditions of the XVII-XVIII centuries, artistic aspirations of the Victorian epoch and outstanding scientific achievements of the British and foreign musicologists of the XX century.
