Criteria for Distinguishing between Ethnic and National Identity

Abstract.
The purpose of the study is to compare mechanisms of ethnic and national identification. The issue is relevant in that these two identification vectors are often not differentiated, which generates many theoretical and practical divisive issues. The article shows that different interaction metrics can be formed between ethnic and national identity. Scientific novelty of the work lies in ascertaining the fact that national identity mainly reflects the conceptual, ideological, political and legal sides of the people’s life, while ethnicity is more oriented towards its cultural, everyday and socio-psychological specifics. As a result of the study, it is shown that ethnicity reflects the irrational, emotional, esoteric, internal, psychological aspects of individual and collective existence, while national identity expresses the rational, external, conceptual, supra-ethnic, exoteric factors of self-consciousness and self-determination of a person and their ethnic group.
