Albert Schweitzer’s Moral Imperative “Reverence for Life” in the Context of Challenge in COVID-19 Epoch

Abstract.
The paper aims to consider the possibility to apply the basic ideas of the moral imperative “reve¬rence for life” suggested by A. Schweitzer (1875-1965) in the context of ethical reflection on the struggle against the COVID-19 pandemic, which started in 2020 and has continued up until now. The scientific ori¬ginality of the research lies in the fact that it analyzes whether the measures obviously needed to prevent and fight the infection which caused the pandemic are consistent with Schweitzer’s idea of “endless” effort to keep and maintain every form of life which lies in the basis of moral relationship. The results show
that the modern biomedical practice which aims at fighting the COVID-19 pandemic does not conflict
with the moral imperative “reverence for life”, but on the contrary follows it.
