The development of the fishing industry of Yakutia during the Great Patriotic War

Abstract. The study aims to create a cohesive scientific understanding of the history of the fishing industry in Yakutia during the Great Patriotic War. In this context, a block of questions related to the reconstruction of a set of measures aimed at establishing a functioning system for identifying fish resources, organizing their extraction, primarily in the Arctic regions of Yakutia, is considered, including the solution to the problem of providing the industry with personnel, storage, and subsequent transportation of caught products. Scientific novelty lies in the following: for the first time in historiography, it is shown that the development of the fishing industry in Yakutia during the Great Patriotic War and the actual growth of its role from regional to all-Union significance were achieved through the implementation of a set of interconnected measures. As a result of the study, it was found that these measures included: the concentration of administrative efforts, active recruitment of labor resources, including the widespread use of coercive methods (utilizing the labor of collective farmers redirected to fishing, mobilized individuals, and special settlers, many of whom perished). In addition, these measures involved the solution of transport, logistics and infrastructure problems in a short time frame, including by relying on the natural and geographical features of Yakutia and the use of cryogenic resources for storing caught fish, as well as ensuring the necessary minimum supply. At the same time, accelerated training of qualified personnel was organized in educational institutions in Yakutsk, along with active scientific support that involved developing a network of stationary institutions and conducting expeditionary research in areas of promising fishing.
