Abstract.
The aim of this study is to identify the reasons for the conflicting assessments of the legendary Tamara Karsavina’s (1885-1978) performance art in Russian ballet criticism of the early 20th century. The article examines the ballerina’s professional dichotomy between her career at the Mariinsky Theatre and her participation in Diaghilev’s Russian Seasons that she became a star of. Within the framework of this creative dualism, critical differences in the statements of St. Petersburg reviewers on Karsavina’s performances in the traditional classical and innovative Fokin’s repertoire are analyzed. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that for the first time the opinions of many reviewers on Karsavina’s mastery are compared. In addition, the question of the influence of ballet criticism on the formation and development of her talent is studied. The work stated that T. Karsavina’s outstanding achievements took place due to the persistent attention of the entire ballet critical community in St. Petersburg, which placed high demands on her creative development.
