The 1790 storming of Izmail by A. V. Suvorov: contradictions in estimates of the garrison’s size and Turkish losses

Abstract.
This study aims to determine the garrison’s size and the casualties suffered by Turkish troops during the storming of Izmail in the Russo-Turkish War of 1787-1791 by the Russian troops of A. V. Suvorov. The article analyzes the modern historiographic tradition derived from the reports written by A. V. Suvorov and G. A. Potemkin, which have not been subjected to critical analysis. A number of published sources (a letter from M. I. Kutuzov, reports from Turkish prisoners) contain estimates that differ from these data. The scientific novelty of this work lies in the introduction of a historical source, consisting of G. A. Potemkin’s rough notes, which has not previously been the subject of historical analysis. This allows us to both offer more substantiated figures for Turkish losses and understand the logic behind the origins of the official reports on military operations. The study found that the number of casualties on the Turkish side did not exceed 15,000, and the reported figure of 30,816 has no basis in fact.
