The 300th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty as a step towards the restoration of the Patriarchate

Abstract. The aim of the study is to establish the connection and degree of influence of the idea of restoring the patriarchate in Russia on the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty. The article discusses the issues of popularization of the idea of the Russian Patriarchate in the early 1910s. In this regard, the visit of Patriarch Gregory IV of Antioch to Russia is highlighted, the patriarch's high role in the jubilee celebrations of 1913, the participation of Archbishop Anthony (Khrapovitsky), a supporter of the patriarchate, and the canonization of Patriarch Hermogenes are shown. Conceived to increase the influence of the monarchy after the 1905 revolution. The jubilee was conceived by Vladyka Anthony as an occasion for the restoration of this institution. He viewed the patriarch as a figure directly connecting the monarch and the masses, strengthening the authority of the church and the tsar as conduits of the transcendent. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that it systematizes data on the participation of Gregory IV in the Romanov celebrations and examines the significance of this visit for domestic political processes in Russia in matters of church reform and strengthening the authority of the monarchy. As a result, it can be stated that Gregory IV's visit to the Romanov feast was successful for the supporters of the patriarchate, who strengthened their positions. Although the restoration of this institution did not happen, the idea of the Russian Patriarchate came to life through the jubilee. Gregory IV's visit to Russia was an important step towards the return of the patriarchate in 1917.
