Abstract. The purpose of the study is to identify the features of composers’ treatment of percussion instruments in the Soviet symphony of the 1970s. The article examines works created during this period by Yu. Butsko, B. Tchaikovsky, G. Dmitriev, and G. Kancheli. Despite the uniqueness of their symphonic concepts, similar compositional solutions regarding the expressive potential of the orchestra’s percussion section are identified. The scientific novelty of the study lies in revealing both shared and individual characteristics of composers’ interpretation of percussion instruments within the genre domain of the Soviet symphony of the 1970s. As a result of the analysis, it is established that Yu. Butsko is characterized by the broadest perspective on the key functions of percussion; G. Dmitriev demonstrates an innovative, largely experimental approach; B. Tchaikovsky shows a more traditional view driven by the principle of economy of expressive means; and G. Kancheli displays an individualized and distinctive approach.
