Abstract.
The purpose of this article is to identify the role of the theme of restoring damaged human nature in one of the manuscript works of Archimandrite Evtikhian (Lestev), a representative of Russian spiritual-academic philosophy of the first half of the 19th century. In terms of its subject matter, the work under study is a variation of practical (moral) theology and cannot be classified directly as an anthropological treatise. Nevertheless, the examination of the human problem serves as a foundational cornerstone of the analyzed manuscript. The scientific novelty of the article lies in the first-ever analysis of the role of the theme of the restoration of human nature in Archimandrite Evtikhian (Lestev)’s early 19th-century work “Practical Theology”, which has made it possible to reveal its foundational significance as an organizing principle for the intrinsic content of the work. As a result of the study, the key tenets of the author’s anthropological concept were reconstructed, contributing to the identification of the fundamental role played by the theme of restoring human nature in the manuscript. Archimandrite Evtikhian addresses the question regarding the causes of human physical mortality and the inconsistency of human actions, finding them in the damage to human nature at all levels, as well as in the distortion of internal spiritual vision, which leads to delusions of the intellect. External actions become a consequence of an internal split within man himself. The theme of achieving salvation and restoration acts as the linking element of Archimandrite Evtikhian’s entire anthropological paradigm. As a representative of religious philosophy, he asserts the possibility of restoring and saving man solely through the mediation and help of God, adherence to the laws He proposes, and the utilization of the means of salvation He established.
