Abstract. The aim of the study is to identify the results of the application of categorization as a discursive practice in the context of constructing the group identity of the Little Russian (Ukrainian-speaking) immigrants of the South Ussuri district in 1882-1909. The article examines the evolution of the population classification system in the administrative documentation and the works of researchers of the South-Ussuri Territory, traces the origin and content of the category “Little Russians”, and analyzes attempts to reinterpret this administrative label into a national Ukrainian identity among the local intelligentsia after 1905. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the application of constructivist methodology (B. Anderson, E. Hobsbawm) and postcolonial optics to the Russian Far Eastern material, which allowed us to show the ambivalent nature of categorization: Little Russians were simultaneously included in the titular group “Russians” and labeled as linguistically and culturally “other”. As a result, it was found that the categorization technology generated by the logic of colonial management created the structural prerequisites for the emergence of the Ukrainian national project in the Far East, however, a complex of factors (the absence of linguistic discrimination, the presence of a more obvious “other” in the person of Chinese and Koreans, the illiteracy of peasants, administrative prohibitions) prevented this identity from taking root among the majority of settlers.
