The Yakut Hunting Society (late 19th – early 20th century): the history of creation, functioning, and the role of officialdom

Abstract.
The purpose of the study is to identify the features of the establishment, organizational structure, and practical activities of the Yakut Hunting Society, taking into account the socio-administrative and natural-climatic conditions of the Yakutsk Oblast. The article examines the history of the society’s foundation and the specifics of its operation prior to 1917. The membership, material and technical conditions, and main directions of the organization’s activities are analyzed. The scientific novelty of the work lies in drawing upon unpublished archival materials, which make it possible to reconstruct in detail the process of establishment and functional characteristics of the Yakut Hunting Society. In contrast to general works on the history of Siberia, this study identifies the personal composition of the organization’s active members for the first time. As a result of the study, it was revealed that civil servants played a special role in the society’s activities: administrative officials initiated the creation of the society, formed its governing bodies, ensured communication with central government departments, and transmitted imperial norms of game management to the regional level. The society developed and implemented a system of seasonal hunting restrictions, organized public hunts with game registration, and established a specialized library. The organization’s activities faced a number of challenges: chronic budget deficits, difficulties in enforcing compliance with regulations among non-members, and a decline in animal populations caused by deforestation around the city of Yakutsk. Despite these obstacles, the society represented the first experience of systematic hunting regulation in the region and served as a channel for disseminating norms of rational nature management.
