East and West in the traditions of the State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg “Peter and Paul Fortress”

Abstract. The aim of the paper is to show the presentation of architecture traditions of the East and West in the State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg “Peter and Paul Fortress”. The article describes the historical background about the creation of “Peter and Paul Fortress” as a fortification in the beginning of the XVIII century. The major sites of “Peter and Paul Fortress” are introduced such as Petrovsky Gate, Trubetskoy Bastion Prison, Peter and Paul Cathedral. The most significant events connected with the development of this historical monument are discussed. It is concluded that the synthesis of the East and West traditions and history creates the unique beauty of this architectural and historical complex and shows the origins of architecture of the past epochs.
