Abstract.

This installment examines the transition from the “hysterical” to the “neurasthenic” phase in the history of emotions. Significant attention is given to the ideas of N. Vasiliev and M. Nordau. Phenomena such as degeneration, decadence, spiritual progress and regression, and the decline of art are considered. A biological interpretation of cultural processes is provided. The article characterizes the hysterical and neurasthenic phases, defining their connection to urban and rural lifestyles. The issue of the disappearance of civilizations is raised. The degeneration of Roman civilization is examined in detail, and parallels are drawn between this phenomenon and the fall of the Russian Empire. The author also investigates the absence of new artistic movements and trends in our time. The processes occurring in the realm of theater, starting with antiquity, are examined. The influence of the circus on theater and cinema is determined. Drawing on research into the history of ancient civilizations, the author attempts to ascertain the causes and signs of cultural degeneration, as well as to find an answer to the question of how to avoid regression.
