Abstract. This article analyzes the graphic illustrations by Anatoly Alekseevich Zaplavny (1939-2019) for animal stories from the collection "Foundling" (published by the Novosibirsk Book Publishing House, 1989, compiled by Yu. M. Mostkov), created based on works by Boris Zhitkov, Mikhail Prishvin, Andrei Platonov, and Nikolai Golovin. The aim of the research is to identify the intonational variability of artistic techniques used by the illustrator in interpreting animalistic images in children's prose. The works selected for analysis differ in stylistic structure, mood, and artistic tasks, which made it possible to trace how graphic means (line, composition, scale, contrast, rhythm, as well as chiaroscuro and tonal organization) vary depending on the literary source. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that Anatoly Zaplavny's illustrations for the "Foundling" collection are for the first time becoming the subject of analysis in an art-historical context. Both black-and-white illustrations executed in the technique of linear graphics and the colored cover of the publication are considered. The choice of illustrations is due to the difference in literary tasks and intonations: from comically eccentric to meditative and dramatic. The article proposes an intonation-oriented approach to considering the visual interpretation of animalistic images, performed on the material of a book project at the regional level. In addition, stable connections between visual and verbal codes in the construction of an animalistic image are revealed. As a result of the research, it was established that the illustrator uses not universal typical techniques, but intonationally specific compositional solutions, adapting the visual language to the emotional and philosophical content of the text. Particular attention is paid to the stylistic integrity of the publication and the significance of the animalistic theme in the formation of the artistic space of a children's book.
