Abstract. The aim of the research is to identify illustrations to works of world literature in V. G. Britvin’s creative legacy and analyze them, as well as to determine the history of the artist’s collaboration with Russian publishing houses. The master’s professionalism allowed him to create works of a high technical and artistic level, which stylistically always corresponded to the character and genre of literature and were organic in the context of the story’s history and geography. Educated in the traditions of the academic school of fine arts, he became a master of book graphics, and leading publishing houses in the country highly valued his long-term collaboration. The scientific novelty of this research lies in identifying the traditions of the academic school of fine arts in Viktor Britvin’s illustrations. When addressing the artist’s work, which resulted in an impressive number of book publications designed by him, close attention was paid to his most characteristic works, which are today classics of Russian book printing. As a result, the features of the artist’s creative style, based on academic principles acquired at the Cheboksary Art School and the Repin Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, are determined. This also allows us to analyze the state of contemporary book graphic art.
