Abstract. The author pays special attention to the important stage of the Austrian national literature formation as a part of the general German culture, mentions the peculiarity of the Austrian prose in the second half of the XX th century, and emphasizes its direct connection with the problems associated with the destruction and formation of national identity, experienced by the Austrians in the XX th century.
