Abstract.
The author reveals the notion of metatext and its correlation with the phenomenon of irony, presents metatextual irony potential in a literary text as the unity of proper linguistic markers of irony, the stylistic means of the creation of irony, situational irony, and the precedentiality of a literary text as the explication of specific linguo-culture features, and reveals this mechanism of metatextual potential implementation by the material of stories by S. Dovlatov.
