Abstract.
The author reveals the main resources of translating the lexemes that represent the notions “midwife” and “woman in childbirth” in the texts of the Russian novels of the XIX
th century translated into French, as a result of the analysis along with the use of lexical equivalents reveals the cases of lexical substitution and the use of semantic devices of omission of semantically redundant elements, and tells that cultural features largely determine the choice of translation equivalence.
