Abstract.
The author considers “Ode on the death of J.-B. Russo” by J.-J. Lefranc de Pompignan in connection with more chamber than odic lyricism ageing in the French poetry of the XVIII
th century, which transforms the canonical genre of ode (in particular, philosophical one), as well as the relations within the literary environment, and concludes that the author of the ode, despite continued attributing to the poets of the “second rank”, appears as the forerunner of the most significant shift in the French poetry development - more individualized lyrical creativity, anticipating the romantic era.
