FEATURES OF EKPHRASIS IN LITERATURE AT THE TURN OF THE XIX TH –XX TH CENTURIES (BY THE MATERIAL OF NOVEL “PORTRAIT OF MR. W. H.” BY O. WILDE)

Abstract. The author discusses the topical for modern literary criticism problem of ekphrasis, determines three specific features that distinguish the ekphrasis from the description as such (self-reflexivity, attributive character, visual figuration), and since all these features were formed in the second half of the XIX th century, comes to the conclusion that in this particular historical period the descriptions of artwork gained independence and became a special kind of description.
